Small dogs lose heat quickly. There is not much of them, they sit closer to cold wet ground than a bigger dog does, and a Yorkshire Terrier or similar toy breed will start shivering on a January walk long before a Labrador notices anything. A thickened coat cut for that shape, rather than scaled down from a large dog pattern, is the difference between a garment that helps and one that hangs off the shoulders.

The body is a checked tweed with a padded, thickened lining for autumn and winter, and it fastens with buttons rather than hook-and-loop, which holds better against a wriggling dog and does not collect fur along the strip. Two front leg openings hold it square on the back so it stays put on the move. The hood is faux fur with teddy-bear ears set into it, and it can sit down on the shoulders as a collar when it is not wanted up.

On sizing and the lead ring. Measure your dog's back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and the chest at its deepest point, then check the chart rather than going by breed. If there is a ring on the back of the coat, treat it as a spare rather than your main attachment. Walk from a properly fitted harness or collar, not from a garment seam.
