A flat mat suits a lot of cats and small dogs better than a bolstered bed does, because plenty of animals want to sprawl rather than curl into a rim. What you get here is a padded mat with a frilled ruffle edge and a small matching pillow, in a cottage-print style. It is soft underneath, light enough to pick up and move to wherever the sun has landed, and easy to shake out.

The pillow is supplied loose rather than sewn in, which is more useful than it sounds. Some pets shove it aside and lie flat, others use it as a headrest, and a few take it away as a toy. Six prints are listed, including the duck design the item is named for, alongside strawberry, floral, bear and lemon patterns, in two sizes described as medium and large. That choice is mostly about which room the mat will live in.

• Padded flat mat with a frilled ruffle edge
• Matching mini pillow supplied loose, not attached
• Six print options including the duck design
• Two sizes, medium and large
• Light enough to move around the house
• Suits cats and small dogs

Two things worth knowing. This is also a soft fabric mat despite the wooden bed wording that has stuck to its web address. There is no frame and no wood involved.

Who it's for: Cats and small dogs who sleep stretched out, in homes where the bed has to look at home in the room it sits in.
