Pet coats and jumpers are sized mainly by back length, with chest girth as a second check. Back length matters most for coverage.

How to measure

Back length: measure along the spine from the base of the neck (collar area) to the base of the tail.
Chest: measure around the widest part of the ribcage, behind the front legs.
If the two measurements suggest different sizes, choose by back length and allow for the chest.

Full description

Big dogs are usually last to be catered for in dog clothing, and the sizes that do exist tend to be technical rather than smart. This is an aviator-cut jacket at the larger end of the range only, in 4XL, 5XL and 6XL, with a faux leather outer, a lapel collar and a shearling-style lining that traps warmth against the body rather than simply blocking the wind at the surface.

The lining is the part doing the work. A deep pile holds a layer of still air next to the coat, and still air is what actually keeps a dog warm, whereas a smooth-lined jacket looks the part and does very little on a cold morning. A full-length zip runs down the front, so the jacket goes over the head and closes in one movement, which is worth having on a dog who treats dressing as an unnecessary delay.
