Legs and belly are what actually come home soaked, and a coat that stops at the ribcage leaves both of them out in it. A four-legged suit covers the lot, which turns a wet walk from a towel-and-mop operation into a matter of peeling one thing off at the door. For a short-coated dog it also keeps wind off the underside, which is where they feel the cold first.

The outer is a weather-resistant shell that sheds rain and blocks wind, with a soft cotton-padded lining behind it for warmth. Built into the back there is a harness with a D-ring, so the lead clips straight onto the suit rather than you having to fit a separate harness underneath and thread it out through a slot. On fit: four-legged suits are the fussiest garment to size, because the back length, the chest girth and the leg length all have to land at once. A suit that fits the chest but comes up short in the back will rub behind the front legs.
