Pavement holds heat long after the air has cooled, and a dog cannot sweat it off; they pant instead, which costs them water far faster than they will ever let on. On sizing and fit: paw protectors have to match your dog's paw width, and dogs need several short sessions indoors before they will walk normally in them. Put them straight on for a two-hour walk and you will end up carrying a dog who has refused to move. On the heat itself, the simple test still works: press the back of your hand to the pavement for seven seconds, and if you cannot hold it there, the walk waits until evening.
