Some dogs need a toy that answers back. A silent plush ball gets carried once and abandoned under the sofa, while one that jingles as it rolls and crackles when it is squashed keeps giving feedback, and feedback is what holds a dog's attention through a wet afternoon indoors when the walk has been cut short by the weather.

The ball has a soft plush cover with a bell sealed inside and colourful crinkle tags stitched around the sides, so it makes two quite different sounds depending on whether it is being rolled or chewed. It is light enough to throw down a hallway without breaking anything and round enough to be awkward to pin down with a paw, which is most of the game as far as the dog is concerned.

• Soft plush cover, gentle on the mouth
• Internal bell that rings as the ball rolls
• Crinkle tags around the sides for a second texture
• Light enough for indoor games
• Three designs: frog, monkey and dog
• Suits fetch, carrying and solo play

Two things worth knowing. Older copy called this a squeaky ball. It is not one, and if your dog is specifically motivated by a squeak this will disappoint you, because the noise comes from a bell and crinkle material. Plush is also strictly for gentle mouths. A dog who strips seams will have the bell out within an afternoon, and a bell is exactly the size that causes trouble when swallowed, so supervise and bin it once the cover splits.

Who it's for: Small to medium dogs and gentle chewers who play with their toys rather than setting out to open them.
