Older dogs and short-legged breeds struggle with high-sided beds. They can climb in when they are fresh and find it awkward when they are stiff, and a bed that takes effort to enter gets used less as the dog ages. A sofa shape solves that by dropping the front edge to almost nothing while keeping a raised back and armrests, so getting in is a step rather than a climb but there is still something to lean into.

The middle section is cushioned to spread pressure across the body rather than concentrating it on hips and elbows, which is what a thin mat fails to do for a bony older dog. The cover comes off completely and goes through a washing machine, so shedding, muddy paws and the odd accident are a wash cycle rather than a problem.
