Small dogs lose heat quickly, and a short or fine coat does very little once the temperature drops towards freezing. A knitted jumper works differently to a waterproof coat: it traps warm air against the body and moves with the dog rather than sitting stiffly over the back. This one is bright red, patterned with pink love-hearts and finished with yellow and blue striped trim at the edges.

The knit is soft and stretchy, so it pulls on over the head without a wrestling match and hugs the body closely enough to hold warmth in without pinning the shoulders. That close fit matters more than it sounds: a loose jumper lets cold air in at the chest and rides up over the back halfway round the block, which is why baggy hand-me-downs never quite work. Five sizes are offered, all in the same red love-heart colourway.

• Soft, stretchy knitted fabric that pulls on over the head
• Pink love-heart pattern on a bright red ground
• Yellow and blue striped trim
• Five sizes, S through to XXL
• Weighs around 160 g to 180 g depending on size
• One colourway only

On sizing: the maker publishes no garment measurements against those letters, only the letters themselves, so we would rather measure with you than guess. Take your dog's back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and their chest girth behind the front legs, and send both over before you order. Knitwear also snags, so keep it for pavements and gardens rather than bramble hedges.

Who it's for: Small, short-coated dogs who shiver on winter walks, and owners who would rather their dog looked cheerful than technical.
