Dark afternoons make a dog harder to see long before the clocks go back, and anything on the collar that catches a passing headlight is worth having. This checked bandana is woven through with luminous thread, so light picks it out against a dark coat on the evening walk round the block. It is not a substitute for a proper lit collar, but it earns its place worn on top of one.

Five prints are available in either a single layer or a double layer. The double layer is the one to pick if you want the bandana to hold its shape and hang properly; the single layer is thinner, cooler and folds smaller, which suits a dog who dislikes anything bulky sitting at the throat. Each is cut as a triangle measuring 65cm along the long edge with two 45cm sides.

Two things worth knowing. Luminous thread returns light that hits it; it does not glow by itself in a pitch-dark field, and it does nothing at all when the fabric is folded under a coat or a harness. Treat it as a small extra on an already-lit walk rather than as your visibility plan.
