Most dogs do not need a heavy coat through a British winter. What they need is something that cuts the wind and can be seen after dark, and a quilted polyester layer weighing between 120g and 150g does both without turning into the sort of coat a dog walks stiffly in. The lighter the layer, the more likely it is to be reached for twice a day rather than left hanging by the door.

Quilting traps a layer of air, and that trapped air is what actually keeps a dog warm rather than the fabric itself. The reflective edge trim handles the other half of the job on a five o'clock walk in December, picking up headlights from the side as well as head-on. On sizing: measure along your dog's back, from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and work from that rather than their weight. A whippet and a French bulldog can weigh the same and need entirely different coats.
