Pet coats and jumpers are sized mainly by back length, with chest girth as a second check. Back length matters most for coverage.
How to measure
- Back length: measure along the spine from the base of the neck (collar area) to the base of the tail.
- Chest: measure around the widest part of the ribcage, behind the front legs.
- If the two measurements suggest different sizes, choose by back length and allow for the chest.

Real wool is unusual in festive pet accessories, and it behaves quite differently from the acrylic that nearly everything else is made of: warmer for its weight, better in damp air, and softer against the coat after a wash or two. Knitted in plaid and snowflake patterns in a plain British style, this looks like a scarf a person would wear, scaled down to fit a cat or a small dog.
Wool has drawbacks worth stating too. It felts if it goes into a warm machine wash, so this is a hand-wash and dry-flat item and always will be. It snags, and a knitted scarf on a determined chewer comes back as a length of crinkled yarn. And a knit is warmth rather than weather protection: it holds heat indoors and on a dry walk, and it soaks through in rain.
