A double coat is two coats, and a household hairdryer only ever dries the top one. The undercoat holds water against the skin for hours after the dog looks dry, which is where that damp smell comes from and, in the worst cases, where hot spots start. Moving enough air to push water out of the dense lower layer is the entire job this is built for.

Airflow does most of the drying here rather than heat, which is the safer way round for an animal that cannot tell you when it is too warm. The brush attachment clips on so you dry and de-shed in the same pass, and the other nozzles narrow the stream when you want to direct it at one area rather than blanket the whole dog.
