Details
Thin-coated dogs lose heat quickly, and the ones who need a layer most, whippets, small terriers and anything elderly, tend to be exactly the ones who look absurd in a padded coat. A proper knit sits closer to the body, moves with them and does the job without the bulk. This one borrows a Nordic Fair Isle pattern, so it reads as a jumper rather than as equipment.
The knit is worked in an all-over Fair Isle pattern with a ribbed roll-neck and a ribbed hem. Ribbing is what stops a jumper riding up the back or letting a draught in at the chest, because it grips gently and springs back instead of stretching out after a few wears. The body has enough give to pull on over the head and front legs without a struggle, which matters most with dogs who dislike being dressed at all.

How to measure
- Chest: measure right round the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.
- Back length: measure along the spine from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
- Knitwear has a little give, but not a lot — if in doubt, size up.
