Pet coats and jumpers are sized mainly by back length, with chest girth as a second check. Back length matters most for coverage.

How to measure

Back length: measure along the spine from the base of the neck (collar area) to the base of the tail.
Chest: measure around the widest part of the ribcage, behind the front legs.
If the two measurements suggest different sizes, choose by back length and allow for the chest.

Knitwear is warmer than fleece for the same thickness, which makes a knitted jumper the sensible choice for a dog who feels the cold on a dry autumn morning. This one is plain black with a skull worked into the back panel — seasonal enough for October, plain enough that it does not look absurd in November. It pulls on over the head, with nothing to fasten and no straps to work loose halfway round the park.

The size range is unusually wide for this kind of thing, running from double extra small through to extra large, so it covers everything from a chihuahua to a medium dog. That range is only useful if you measure, though. Knit stretches, and a jumper that is slightly too small looks fine across the shoulders and then rides up and bunches behind the front legs, which is exactly where it starts to rub.
