There is a real difference between a coat that resists water and one that water cannot pass through at all, and PU film is firmly in the second camp. Rain sits on the surface and runs off it. Nothing wicks, nothing soaks and nothing is still damp in the hall two hours later - you shake it out and hang it up. For a dog that gets walked in genuine rain, that is the whole argument.

The trade-off is that a waterproof film does not breathe, so a dog will warm up inside it on a long outing much as a person does in a plastic mac. Use it for the twenty minutes to the park and back rather than for an afternoon on the hills. It is also transparent, which sounds like a novelty but is useful: you can see the collar, the harness and the dog's own markings through it.

• Transparent PU film
• Six sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL and 2XL
• Seven colours: black, white, yellow, orange, pink, blue and green
• Weighs 40g to 100g depending on size
• Twenty-four colour and size combinations
• Supplied as one raincoat

Two things worth knowing. And plastic rustles, so a sound-sensitive dog may want a couple of short sessions indoors wearing it before its first walk out in it.

Who it's for: dogs that get walked whatever the weather, long-coated breeds that take hours to dry off, and owners tired of a wet coat dripping across the kitchen floor.
