Small dogs get the worst of stiff nylon harnesses. Webbing that sits perfectly well on a labrador cuts into a chihuahua's armpit and has the fur off in a fortnight. Sherpa fleece answers that particular problem: soft enough to sit against thin skin all walk, and thick enough to spread the pull of the lead across the whole chest rather than concentrating it on two narrow straps and a collar.

It is a step-in design, so the dog puts their front feet through and the fastening closes over the back, avoiding the part most small dogs object to, which is having a loop pushed over their head. The D-rings sit on top where a lead clip reaches them without twisting the whole harness sideways. Harnesses are sized on chest girth, measured right round the body just behind the front legs, and not on weight, so a compact terrier and a leggy whippet cross of identical weight take different sizes.

• Sherpa-fleece body, soft against thin skin
• Step-in design fastening over the back
• D-rings for lead attachment
• Metallic bow detail
• Sizes from XXS through to M, depending on colour
• Turquoise green and pink colourways

On what actually arrives. Some variants are the chest strap on its own and others are the chest strap with lead, so the matching lead is not included on every option and it is worth reading the variant name before you add it to the basket. The size range also differs between the two colours, so the size you want may only exist in one of them.

What the options mean. Sizes run from XXS to M — £48.99 for the smallest, £87.99 for the largest.

Who it's for: Owners of small or toy breeds who pull gently or not at all, and who want something padded rather than a strong-dog harness scaled down.
