Retrieve training works best when the thing being retrieved survives being dropped in water as often as it's thrown into it, which rules out most soft toys before the game even starts.

This is Classic's Training Dumbbell, made from high-strength nylon and available in three sizes so it can be matched to the dog doing the retrieving. It floats, which makes it usable for training retrieves from both land and water, and the largest of the three - the 7-inch size - measures 180mm overall and is intended for larger breeds. It comes on a header card with a euro slot.

• Available in three sizes
• Made from high-strength nylon
• Floats, for retrieve training on land or water
• The largest (7-inch) size measures 180mm overall
• Suited to larger dog breeds at that size
• Assorted colours

On sizing. Classic don't publish the dimensions of the smaller two sizes on this listing, only the largest - so if your dog is small or medium, you're choosing by their general size rather than an exact measurement.

Who it's for: owners doing structured retrieve or fetch training, including in water, who want a dumbbell sized appropriately to their dog rather than a generic one-size toy.
