Retrieve training works best when the thing being retrieved survives being dropped in water as often as it's thrown into it, which rules out most soft toys before the game even starts.

This is Classic's Training Dumbbell, made from high-strength nylon and available in three sizes so it can be matched to the dog doing the retrieving. It floats, which makes it usable for training retrieves from both land and water, and the largest of the three - the 7-inch size - measures 180mm overall and is intended for larger breeds. It comes on a header card with a euro slot.
