Five variations on the same idea, which sounds trivial until you have two dogs and want them in different bandanas in the same photograph. Red Santa, green Santa, a small Santa on a red ground, the same small Santa on blue, and a red deer stripe — all cotton, all cut to one size, a triangle of 64cm along the tie edge and 45cm down each side.

Cotton is the right choice for a bandana that sits under a chin. It takes up drool and the drips from a water bowl rather than letting them run down the chest, it washes at a normal temperature with the rest of the household laundry, and it feels like fabric rather than plastic against the skin of a dog who is already unconvinced about wearing anything at all. It will crease in the drawer and it will soften with age, and both of those are fine.

Check the measurement first. It is labelled medium, but a 64cm tie edge is a medium-to-large dog's bandana — knotted onto a small terrier the point will very nearly reach the floor. Measure your dog's neck, allow enough spare to knot comfortably, and if the figure comes in under about 35cm look at the smaller cotton bandanas in the range instead.

Who it's for: Multi-dog households after matching-but-different Christmas bandanas, and owners of medium and large dogs who prefer cotton to polyester.
