A dog that's gone off its dry food, or lost a few teeth with age, hasn't necessarily lost its appetite - it's often just decided that dry biscuit is more effort than it's worth. That's where a soft, wet food earns its place, whatever the label calls it.

This is a wet food built around free range chicken as the single animal protein, with carrots and brown rice making up most of the rest, and it's high in moisture compared with a dry kibble. It's a complete food, formulated to be the whole diet rather than a topper.

• Complete wet food for adult and senior dogs of any breed, built around free range chicken
• Composition: Free Range Chicken 27.5%, Carrots 25%, Brown Rice 13%, Minerals
• Protein 6.5%, Fat 4%, Fibre 0.6%, Ash 2%
• Moisture 75%
• Single protein source, no other meat or fish
• Sold individually: one 395g tray, or the 150g size

On the protein percentage. At 6.5% this looks thin next to a dry kibble's figure, but that's the moisture talking - at 75% moisture, most of a tray's weight is water, so the protein content is much closer to a dry food's once that's allowed for. Burns don't publish a dry-matter equivalent figure, so this is a general point about how wet food percentages read rather than a specific claim about this recipe against another.

Who it's for: adult and senior dogs of any breed who need or prefer a soft, high-moisture food - older dogs with fewer teeth, fussy eaters, or dogs who benefit from extra water intake at mealtimes.
