A tug toy has about ten seconds to be more interesting than whatever the dog was already doing. Putting three different textures on one toy is a reasonable answer to that: there is a soft jersey rope down the middle, a TPR bone at one end and a soft ball at the other, so a dog that gets bored of chewing can switch to shaking or tugging without going to find something else.

It is 39cm long, which is the length that matters on a tug toy — enough for you to hold one end and the dog to hold the other without your hand being in the way of their teeth. The rope is a patchwork jersey rather than a tight cotton twist.

• 39cm long
• Soft jersey rope with a TPR bone and a soft ball
• Patchwork design across the length of it
• Single toy per pack
• Suits interactive play rather than being left down

On what we do not know. Best Pets supply the length and the materials and nothing else — there is no weight for the ball, no washing instruction and no published guidance on which size of dog it suits. Treat a soft jersey rope as a supervised toy rather than a chew that gets left with a determined chewer, because a rope toy that comes apart is a swallowing risk regardless of who made it.

Who it's for: owners who play tug and want one toy that offers a dog three things to do with it, and anyone whose dog loses interest in a plain rope within a week.
