Meat-free dog food: what we carry, and what to know first

Dogs, unlike cats, are able to do well on a properly formulated meat-free diet, because they are not obligate carnivores in the same strict sense — but 'properly formulated' is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and a meat-free diet thrown together from plant ingredients without the right balance is a genuine risk rather than a shortcut. Right now, the meat-free option we carry is Benevo Vegan Original Puppy Food, alongside their Rumble Strips treat.

Why owners choose meat-free food

Ethical and environmental reasons are the most common motivation, alongside a smaller number of dogs with a genuine intolerance to multiple animal proteins where a vet has suggested exploring plant-based options as part of a wider plan. Personal preference alone is also a perfectly reasonable reason, provided the diet chosen is nutritionally sound.

What matters far more than the motivation is whether the specific product is a complete, properly balanced diet rather than simply a collection of plant ingredients. A dog fed an incomplete diet, meat-free or otherwise, over a long period can develop real nutritional deficiencies.

What 'complete' actually requires

A dog needs a full amino acid profile, and some nutrients that are naturally abundant in meat — certain amino acids and vitamins among them — need to be deliberately added back into a plant-based recipe to make it genuinely complete rather than merely meat-free. A reputable meat-free food will state clearly that it is complete and balanced for the relevant life stage, the same as any other complete dog food would.

This is not a diet to assemble at home from vegetables and grains without proper formulation, however well-intentioned. A commercially produced, clearly labelled complete meat-free food has done that formulation work; a homemade version generally has not, unless designed with a vet's or veterinary nutritionist's specific input.

What we actually carry

Our meat-free range today is a single puppy recipe, Benevo Vegan Original Puppy Food, plus their Rumble Strips treat, rather than a full range covering every life stage. If you are looking for a complete meat-free food for an adult dog specifically, that is not yet something we have a dedicated option for.

Puppy formulas are calculated for growth, with different calorie and nutrient needs from an adult diet, so a vegan puppy food is not automatically appropriate for a fully grown dog even where meat-free suitability is otherwise not in question. Any significant diet change, meat-free or not, is worth discussing with your vet first, particularly for a dog with an existing health condition.

Common questions

Is meat-free dog food nutritionally complete?
It can be, provided it is a properly formulated commercial product that states it is complete and balanced for the relevant life stage. A homemade meat-free diet assembled without proper formulation is a genuine risk rather than a safe alternative.
Can adult dogs eat vegan puppy food?
No, not as a long-term diet. Puppy formulas are calculated for growth and carry different calorie and nutrient levels from an adult diet, so they are not an appropriate substitute for a complete adult food even where the meat-free aspect is not the issue.
Why do some owners choose meat-free dog food?
Ethical and environmental reasons are the most common, alongside occasional cases where a vet has suggested exploring plant-based options for a dog with intolerances to multiple animal proteins. Personal preference is also a valid reason, provided the food chosen is properly complete.
Is meat-free dog food the same as grain-free?
No, these are unrelated. Grain-free refers to the absence of cereal grains and says nothing about whether meat is included, while meat-free specifically means no animal protein at all, and a food can be one, both, or neither.
