Kibble dog food

Kibble is complete dry dog food made into small, hard biscuits, and it is the most widely fed format in the UK because it stores easily, portions simply, and does not need refrigerating once opened. The main practical differences from wet food, pouches and trays come down to storage, how you portion a meal, and how much mess is left behind.

How kibble compares to wet, pouch and tray

Kibble keeps for weeks once a bag is opened, provided it is sealed and kept somewhere cool and dry, which makes it easy to buy in bulk and store without needing fridge space. Wet food, pouches and trays need refrigerating once opened and using up within a day or two, which suits some routines less well than others.

Portioning kibble is straightforward with a scoop or scales, and a bag lasts through many meals without the packaging waste that comes with a pouch or tray for every meal. Wet food tends to be more palatable for fussy eaters and dogs who need extra water in their diet, which is where the two formats genuinely differ rather than one simply being better than the other.

What to look for on the bag

A complete label means the food is designed to be fed on its own without anything added, which is what most adult dogs need day to day. A complementary food is meant to be fed alongside something else, and checking which one you have is worth doing before you commit to a bag.

Life stage matters more than it might seem — puppy, adult and senior formulas are balanced differently for growth, maintenance or an older dog's changing needs, and a dog eating the wrong life-stage food for an extended period is worth mentioning to your vet at a routine check.

Storage and freshness in practice

Keep kibble in its original bag, rolled or clipped shut, or in an airtight container, away from damp and direct heat — a shed or garage that gets warm in summer is not an ideal spot for a bag that needs to last weeks.

Buying a bag size that will be used up within roughly a month or so of opening keeps the food fresher than a large sack bought for the saving but left half-full for months. Smell and appearance are a reasonable guide — kibble that smells stale or has changed colour or texture is past its best.

Switching or introducing a new kibble

Introduce any new kibble gradually over a week or so, mixing increasing amounts in with the old food rather than swapping overnight, which gives your dog's digestion time to adjust and makes an upset stomach far less likely.

If your dog has a known sensitivity, a grain-free or single-protein recipe is worth discussing with your vet before you buy a large bag on the strength of the packaging alone — what works for one dog does not automatically work for another with a similar sensitivity.

Common questions

Is kibble better than wet food for dogs?
Neither is automatically better — they suit different routines and different dogs. Kibble stores easily and portions simply, while wet food tends to be more palatable and adds extra water to the diet. Many owners feed a mix of both rather than choosing one exclusively.
How long does an opened bag of kibble last?
Most kibble stays reasonably fresh for several weeks once opened, provided it is kept sealed, cool and dry. Buying a bag size that will be finished within about a month of opening keeps the food fresher than a large sack left half-used for a long stretch.
What does 'complete' mean on a dog food bag?
It means the food is designed to be fed on its own, without anything else added, and covers what a dog needs nutritionally at that life stage. A 'complementary' food is meant to be fed alongside something else rather than as the whole meal.
How do I switch my dog to a new kibble?
Introduce it gradually over about a week, mixing in a little more of the new food and a little less of the old each day rather than swapping in one go. This gives your dog's stomach time to adjust and lowers the chance of an upset.
