Can gerbils eat courgette?

Yes, gerbils can eat courgette, but only as an occasional, small addition rather than a regular part of their diet. Courgette is not toxic, but gerbils are desert-adapted animals whose bodies are not built for a lot of moisture-heavy food, so a food that is perfectly fine for many small pets is one to give sparingly here.

Why less is more with this particular vegetable

Gerbils evolved in arid environments and get most of the moisture they need from their food rather than drinking large amounts, which means their digestive systems are not well suited to a diet with much high-water-content vegetable in it. Courgette is over ninety per cent water, which makes it an easy vegetable for most small pets but a slightly awkward one for a gerbil specifically.

A small piece now and then is not a problem, and plenty of gerbils enjoy the taste and texture. The issue only arises if courgette, or vegetables like it, becomes a regular feature rather than an occasional extra.

How to serve it

Wash the courgette and offer a small, thumbnail-sized piece rather than a slice — a gerbil's stomach is tiny, and what looks like a modest amount to us is a substantial portion for them. There is no need to peel it, and the seeds inside a young courgette are not a concern in the small quantities involved.

Remove any uneaten piece from the enclosure within a few hours, since damp vegetable left to sit encourages mould and dirties the bedding faster than dry food does. Introduce it for the first time in a very small amount and watch how your gerbil gets on before offering it again.

When to hold off

If your gerbil has had loose droppings recently, or has a known sensitive stomach, skip courgette and other high-moisture vegetables until things have settled. The same caution applies to any gerbil not used to fresh food at all — introduce it gradually rather than all at once.

Watch for diarrhoea, a wet tail area or a gerbil who seems unusually quiet after trying courgette for the first time. If any of that appears, stop offering it and speak to a vet experienced with small pets if it does not settle within a day.

Fitting fresh food around a gerbil's normal diet

A good gerbil mix, formulated with the right balance of seeds and grains for their needs, should stay the main event, with fresh vegetables like courgette treated as an occasional side rather than a daily fixture. Keeping the ratio firmly in favour of the dry mix is what keeps a gerbil's digestion settled long-term.

Rotating small pieces of a few different low-moisture vegetables through the week, rather than offering courgette on its own repeatedly, spreads out the exposure to any one food and keeps things genuinely varied without leaning too hard on the vegetables a gerbil handles least well, which is a useful habit to build early on with any young or newly homed gerbil.

Common questions

How much courgette can a gerbil have?
A small, thumbnail-sized piece once or twice a week is plenty. Gerbils are desert animals with digestive systems not well suited to a lot of moisture-heavy food, so treat courgette as an occasional extra rather than a regular addition to their diet.
Can gerbils eat courgette skin?
Yes, the skin is not toxic and does not need to be removed. Wash the courgette thoroughly first to remove any residue, the same as you would for any fresh vegetable given to a small pet.
Why is too much fresh vegetable bad for gerbils specifically?
Gerbils evolved to survive on dry, low-moisture food in arid conditions, and their digestion is not well adapted to a diet heavy in water-rich vegetables. Too much can lead to loose droppings and digestive upset in a way it would not for many other small pets.
What should gerbils eat most of the time?
A proper gerbil or small-animal mix formulated for their needs should make up the large majority of their diet, with fresh vegetables like courgette kept to small, occasional amounts on top. This keeps their digestion settled and covers their nutritional needs far more reliably than fresh food alone.
