Dog treats for small breeds
A small breed treat is not just a marketing label — it is genuinely sized and portioned differently to account for how few calories a small dog needs each day, and how much smaller their mouth is compared with a medium or large breed. Understanding what that label change actually means makes it far easier to choose sensibly rather than guessing from the packet alone.
What "small breed" actually means on a treat
A treat labelled for small breeds is usually smaller in physical size, sized for a mouth that might struggle with a treat built for a Labrador, and often lower in calories per piece to reflect how little a small dog needs across a whole day. A toy or small breed can gain weight quickly on the same treat a larger dog would barely notice, so this distinction matters more than it might first appear.
Not every product labelled for small breeds is meaningfully different from a standard version cut smaller, so it is worth checking the calorie content per treat rather than assuming the label alone guarantees a better fit for a small dog.
What actually changes for small dogs
Beyond size, small breeds often have proportionally more dental crowding than larger dogs, which is part of why dental-specific treats sized for small mouths are worth considering alongside standard reward treats. A treat that is genuinely easy for a small dog to chew and swallow safely, rather than something they have to work at or risk choking on, matters more here than it does for a larger dog with more room in its mouth.
Because small dogs need so few daily calories overall, treats can make up a disproportionately large share of their diet if they are not sized down properly, which is the main practical reason to choose a genuinely small-breed product rather than simply breaking a standard treat in half.
How to use the grid below
The products shown cover treats genuinely sized and portioned for small dogs, from soft training treats to dental chews built for a smaller mouth. Check the calorie or size information on the specific product rather than assuming every item labelled small breed is identical in portion size.
If you are training a small puppy, soft treats that can be broken into pieces smaller than the pack suggests give you more control over portion size than a hard biscuit that only comes apart in large chunks. That flexibility tends to matter more day to day than any single feature printed on the label.

Common questions
- What counts as a small breed dog?
- There is no single official cut-off, but small breeds are generally considered dogs under around 10kg as adults, such as Chihuahuas, Pomeranians and Yorkshire Terriers. Treats and food labelled for small breeds are formulated with this weight range in mind.
- Are small breed treats just regular treats cut smaller?
- Sometimes, but a genuinely well-formulated small breed treat is also lower in calories per piece and sized for a smaller mouth, not simply a standard treat reduced in size. Checking the calorie content is the most reliable way to tell the difference.
- Why do small dogs need to be careful with treats?
- Small breeds have very low daily calorie requirements, so even a small amount of extra food or treats represents a bigger share of their needs than the same treat would for a larger dog. It is easy to overtreat a small dog without realising.
- Are dental treats worth it for small breed dogs?
- Many small breeds are prone to dental crowding and tartar build-up because their teeth are proportionally larger relative to their jaw size. A dental treat sized correctly for a small mouth can be a useful addition to regular brushing.
