Cowboy Dog Costumes

The rider costume is the one people mean — a small cowboy strapped to your dog’s back so it looks like they’re being ridden. If that’s more than your dog will tolerate, a hat and bandana set gets most of the way there with none of the fuss.

Rider costumes, and how they sit

A rider costume straps around the chest and belly with the figure sitting over the shoulders. It is more structure than a cape, so it suits a dog who is already relaxed about wearing things, and it needs checking for rubbing under the front legs.

They are also front-heavy. On a small or narrow-chested dog the figure can list to one side, which looks worse in photographs than it does in the product shot.

The lighter option

A cowboy hat and bandana set covers the head and neck only — nothing across the body, nothing round the legs. For most dogs this is the version that actually gets worn for more than thirty seconds, and it reads just as clearly in a photograph.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

Is it safe to put my pet in a costume?

For short, supervised periods, yes. A costume must never restrict breathing, sight, hearing or movement, must have nothing small enough to chew off and swallow, and should never be left on an unattended pet — including overnight or during rough play. If your pet freezes, flattens their ears, or tries to back out of it, take it off and try a bandana instead.

How do I get the size right?

Measure three things while your pet is standing: neck circumference, chest at the widest point just behind the front legs, and back length from the collar to the base of the tail. Chest is the measurement that decides the size — if your pet is between sizes, go up.

Will a rider costume annoy my dog?

More than a cape will, because there is weight over the shoulders and straps under the body. Try it indoors first. If your dog freezes or tries to shake it off, the hat and bandana set is the better buy.
