What salmon oil adds to a recipe
Salmon oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, and it's commonly included specifically to support skin and coat condition and general wellness rather than as a protein source.
This is distinct from salmon meat itself, which provides protein. A food can use a different fish or meat as its main protein and still include salmon oil separately, purely for its fat content and fatty acid profile.
How to tell if it's a meaningful amount
UK ingredient lists are ordered by weight, so where salmon oil appears in the list is a rough guide to how much is actually included. Near the top of a shorter ingredients list suggests a more meaningful inclusion than buried near the end of a long one.
A food can legitimately say "with salmon oil" on the front of the pack while including only a small amount, so checking its position in the full ingredients list gives a better sense of how significant the inclusion really is than the front-of-pack claim alone.
Salmon oil compared with other omega-3 sources
Fish oils generally, including salmon oil but also other named fish oils, are a more direct source of the specific omega-3s that support skin, coat and general condition than plant oils such as flaxseed.
Plant-based oils contain a related but different form of omega-3 that a cat's body converts less efficiently into the same active forms, which is why fish-based sources are more commonly used in cat food aimed at skin and coat support.
