Canary food: what a canary actually needs
A canary's diet should be built around a proper canary seed mix or a complete pelleted food, topped up with fresh leafy greens a few times a week and the odd treat. A seed mix alone, with nothing else added, tends to let a canary pick out only its favourite seeds and miss out on the balance the whole mix is meant to provide.
The base: seed mix or pellets
A canary-specific seed mix, rather than a generic budgie or general cage-bird blend, is built for a canary's smaller beak and particular nutritional needs. Pelleted complete diets are the other main option, and they solve the picking problem that loose seed mixes have, since every pellet carries the same balanced formula rather than letting a bird choose its favourites.
Whichever base you choose, fresh water needs changing daily, and a millet spray or the occasional treat stick is fine as an extra rather than a meal replacement.
Fresh food alongside the base diet
Small amounts of leafy greens, such as spinach or watercress, a few times a week add moisture and variety that a dry seed or pellet diet does not fully provide on its own. Introduce anything new gradually and remove whatever is not eaten within a few hours so it does not sit and spoil in the cage.
Grit is also worth having available, since canaries use small amounts of it to help grind food in their gizzard, and a cuttlefish bone or mineral block gives them a source of calcium alongside it.
What to avoid
Avocado is genuinely toxic to birds and should never be offered in any form, and chocolate, caffeine and salty or sugary human food have no place in a canary's diet either. Stick to foods intended for birds or plain fresh vegetables in small amounts.
A canary that stops eating, becomes fluffed up and quiet, or shows a change in its droppings should be seen by a vet experienced with birds, since these small birds can decline quickly once something is genuinely wrong.
