Burns dog food feeding guide

Burns is a UK dog food brand known for straightforward recipes built around a single named protein and rice, aimed at dogs with sensitive digestion. There is no single feeding amount that suits every dog, so rather than inventing one, this page covers what we stock and how to actually work out the right portion for your own dog.

What we stock

Our range includes the Burns Original recipes in Chicken & Brown Rice and Lamb & Brown Rice, the Adult/Senior Original Fish & Brown Rice, the Sensitive range in Duck & Brown Rice and the grain-free Duck & Potato, the Active Working Dog Chicken & Rice formula, and the Burns Variety Box for dogs who do better with some rotation between recipes.

The single-protein approach across the range is designed to make it easier to identify what does or does not agree with a dog, which is a large part of why Burns tends to be recommended for dogs with known sensitivities.

How to work out the right amount

Every Burns pack carries a feeding guide on the label, and that is the correct starting point — it is based on your dog's weight and life stage, and it is more reliable than any generic figure quoted elsewhere. Treat the printed guide as a starting point, then adjust up or down based on how your dog actually looks and feels.

Body condition is the real test: you should be able to feel your dog's ribs easily without pressing hard, and see a waist from above. If your dog is gaining or losing weight on the amount the pack recommends, reduce or increase the portion gradually and check in with your vet if you are not sure, particularly for a puppy, a senior dog, or a dog with a health condition.

Common questions

How much Burns dog food should I feed my dog?
Start with the feeding guide printed on the pack, which is based on your dog's weight and life stage, then adjust based on their body condition over the following weeks. Every dog's needs differ, so treat the guide as a starting point rather than a fixed rule.
Why does Burns use a single protein in each recipe?
Keeping each recipe to one named protein and rice is meant to make it easier to identify what suits a dog and what does not, which is particularly useful for dogs with a known or suspected food sensitivity.
Can I switch between different Burns recipes?
Yes, many owners do rotate between recipes, and the Burns Variety Box is designed with this in mind. Introduce any new recipe gradually alongside the current one over several days rather than switching all at once.
My dog isn't maintaining a healthy weight on the recommended amount — what should I do?
Adjust the portion gradually based on your dog's body condition, and speak to your vet if you are unsure how much to change it by or if the issue persists. This is especially worth doing for puppies, senior dogs, or dogs with an existing health condition.
