A golden retriever's thick double coat is the main thing that should decide the collar, more than the breed's easygoing reputation might suggest. A collar that is too narrow or sits too tight will flatten and rub the coat around the neck over time, so width and a comfortable fit matter more here than they would on a short-coated breed.
Why width and fit matter more than usual
Golden retrievers carry a dense double coat with a soft undercoat, and a narrow or poorly fitted collar sits directly against that fur every time the dog wears it. Over months, a collar that is too tight or too thin can wear a visible line into the coat, which is avoidable simply by choosing a wider, well-padded collar and checking the fit properly rather than by the coat itself.
A rolled or padded collar spreads pressure more evenly than a flat, narrow strap, and is worth the extra cost for a breed that wears its collar every day of a long, active life. Leather and padded nylon both do this job well; the padding matters more than the material.
Sizing and adjustment
Goldens vary a fair amount in size between individual dogs and between the working and show lines, so it is worth measuring your own dog's neck rather than buying by breed name alone. Leave enough room to fit two fingers flat between the collar and the neck, and recheck the fit as a young dog fills out through its first two years.
A collar bought for a growing puppy will need replacing at least once, sometimes twice, before the dog reaches full adult size, so it is not worth spending heavily on the first one.
What to look for beyond fit
Golden retrievers are a popular breed for early recall training, and a collar with a sturdy D-ring matters if you plan to attach an ID tag and lead regularly, since the ring takes repeated strain over the dog's lifetime. Reflective stitching is a sensible addition too, given how many goldens end up on regular early morning or evening walks.
A quick-release or easy-clip buckle is worth having for a breed known for enjoying water, since a soaked collar buckle can be fiddly to undo with wet hands at the worst possible moment.

- A wider collar, generally 25mm or more for an adult dog, spreads pressure across more of the neck and coat than a narrow one, and is more comfortable for a breed that wears its collar all day, every day, for a long working life.
- Should I buy a padded or a plain collar for a golden retriever?
