Choosing a design

• Breezy Love Purple — The softest print in the range, and the one to pick if the geometrics feel too sharp for a light-coated dog. Four sizes from XS. Red Dingo hardware, and the five-year guarantee is what makes it worth more than a supermarket collar.
• Bumble Bee Black — Yellow on black is the most legible pairing there is, which is why wasps, road signs and warning tape all landed on it independently. It holds its shape in failing light where a dark colour does not. A tag wears a patch; normal.
• Bumble Bee Turquoise — Yellow on turquoise is about the highest-contrast combination in the range, which is what you want on a dog who disappears into long grass. Note the sizes run XS, small and large, with no medium. Five-year guarantee behind the buckle.
• Camouflage Green — The one that genuinely camouflages, which is a mixed blessing: it looks smart on a working dog and it is the last colour you want if you are trying to spot them in bracken. Four sizes, and the same five-year guarantee.
• Camouflage Hot Pink — The joke works because it hides from absolutely nothing. Broken shapes give it texture up close while the colour makes it one of the easiest collars in the range to spot in bracken. If you have lost a dog in cover, you know which matters.

• Fang it Red — The joke is small enough that from any distance it reads as a graphic print, and only up close does anyone work out what it is. That is why it survives past October instead of going in a drawer. Two fingers under it when fastened.

• Flying Bones Red — When a dog is halfway into a hedge, the collar is often the only part of them you can see. White bones on strong red keeps its edges when it is half-hidden and moving. Rinse the grit out of the buckle after a beach walk.
• Gingham Yellow — Yellow is the last colour the eye gives up on as light goes, which is why gritters and hi-vis use it. In gingham it looks like a normal collar. Useful on a towpath at dusk without dressing your dog in sportswear.

• Horizontal Stripes Navy — Navy for when black feels severe and bright feels like too much. Be clear though: in the dark it behaves exactly like black, so if you walk after work, light the dog separately rather than expecting the collar to do it.
• Hot Pink Stars on Grey — The quieter version of the star print: same hot pink stars, but on grey they read as a detail rather than a statement. Suits a dog whose coat is already busy. Grey is also the middle ground on mud.
• Modern on Cool Grey — The plainest thing in the design range, closer to a good watch strap than to pet kit, and the one I point people towards when they say they want something that does not look like a dog collar. Grey keeps well too.

• Rainbow Red — In a two or three dog house, telling collars apart stops being an aesthetic question at six in the morning when you are clipping leads in the dark. A rainbow band is unmistakable next to a plain one. Give one dog this.
• Squiggles Black — Black hides mud, which is why most of us reach for it, and also why so many dogs vanish against a wet November pavement. The pale squiggle keeps the practicality and gives a torch beam something to catch. Ask me for measurements.
• Stars Lime on Hot Pink — Nothing in a British landscape is this pink, which is exactly why your eye lands on it first in long grass or a bramble hedge. Not subtle, and that is the argument. Bright dyes want rinsing after salt water to keep their edge.
• Stars White on Cool Grey — The restrained one in the star range. White on cool grey reads clearly against almost any coat without adding another bright colour to a dog already wearing a harness, a tag and a coat. Measure with a soft tape first.

• White Spots on Red — Bold spots stay legible when the dog is moving, which small motifs and stripes do not, and it is the same reason the pattern turns up on buoys and hazard tape. On a chestnut or fox-red coat, take a navy ground instead.
