What the law requires, and what to engrave
Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, any dog on a road or public place must wear a collar with the owner’s name and address inscribed on it or on a tag. Breaking it can mean a fine, so this is the one accessory you genuinely can’t skip.
Engrave your surname and address — a postcode and house number is enough — plus a mobile number, which isn’t legally required but is what gets you reunited soonest. There’s rarely room for the dog’s name, and many advise leaving it off so a stranger can’t call your dog away.
Choosing a tag that lasts and backs up the chip
Stainless steel and solid brass resist scratching and stay legible far longer than soft aluminium or painted finishes. Deep, machine-engraved text outlives stamped lettering that wears smooth in a year of jingling against a collar.
A tag and a microchip do different jobs: the chip is permanent and the legal microchipping requirement still applies, but only a vet or warden can scan it, whereas anyone who finds your dog can read a tag on the spot. Wear both.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.
Common questions
Is a dog ID tag a legal requirement in the UK?
Yes. The Control of Dogs Order 1992 requires dogs in a public place to wear a tag or collar showing the owner’s name and address. Failing to comply can lead to a fine.
Should I put my dog’s name on the tag?
Your name and address are what the law requires; the dog’s name is optional. Many owners leave it off so a stranger can’t use it to call the dog to them.
Do I still need a tag if my dog is microchipped?
Yes — microchipping is also a legal requirement, but only a scanner reads a chip. A tag lets any finder contact you immediately, so the two work together.
