What the law requires, and what to engrave
Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, any dog on a road or public place must wear a collar with the owner’s name and address inscribed on it or on a tag. Breaking it can mean a fine, so this is the one accessory you genuinely can’t skip.
Engrave your surname and address — a postcode and house number is enough — plus a mobile number, which isn’t legally required but is what gets you reunited soonest. There’s rarely room for the dog’s name, and many advise leaving it off so a stranger can’t call your dog away.
Choosing a tag that lasts and backs up the chip
