Dog Paw Balm

Winter is hard on paws: cold, dry air saps moisture, while the rock salt and grit spread on UK pavements is abrasive and irritating, leaving pads chapped and sore. A wax-based balm forms a barrier that keeps the worst of the salt off, and wiping or rinsing paws after a winter walk stops your dog licking that salt — which can upset their stomach — back off their feet.

Summer brings the opposite problem. Tarmac and paving heat up enough to blister pads; the simple test is the back of your hand — if you can’t hold it on the ground for seven seconds, it’s too hot to walk on, so go early or late instead. Balm helps condition and toughen pads over time and soothes them after a long or rough outing, though it’s no substitute for sensible timing on a hot day.

Pick a balm made for dogs with natural, lick-safe ingredients — paws end up in mouths, so this matters. A firmer wax gives longer-lasting protection for walks, while a softer butter is ideal for overnight conditioning of badly cracked pads. Avoid anything containing zinc oxide or essential oils that aren’t confirmed dog-safe.

Application is easy: clean and dry the paws, massage a thin layer into each pad and between the toes, then keep your dog distracted for a couple of minutes so it soaks in rather than getting licked straight off — a walk, a meal or a lick mat works well. Reapply before walks for protection and at bedtime for repair. If a crack is deep, bleeding, swollen or clearly painful, have your vet take a look rather than relying on balm alone.
