What to feed a Samoyed
Samoyeds are a large, thick-coated Arctic breed bred originally for pulling sledges and herding in cold climates, which means a complete adult food matched to their actual activity level, plus attention to skin and coat support, matters more than anything breed-specific by name.
Why a Samoyed's history and coat shape what they need
Samoyeds were bred to work hard in cold conditions, which gave them a dense double coat and a build suited to sustained activity rather than short bursts. A modern Samoyed living as a pet is usually far less active than their working ancestors, so matching food to actual daily exercise — not the breed's history — is what keeps weight in check.
The thick white coat is prone to shedding heavily, particularly during seasonal changes, and a diet with a genuinely named fat source rather than a vague "animal fat" tends to support skin and coat condition better.
Managing weight on a fluffy breed
A heavy coat can hide early weight gain, since a Samoyed can look the same size to the eye while carrying more weight underneath the fur. Regularly feeling along the ribs is a more reliable check than judging by appearance alone.
If your Samoyed isn't getting the level of exercise their build suggests, adjusting portion size — or moving to a lower-calorie adult recipe — is more effective than restricting treats alone.
Wet, dry, or grain-free
