Pond nets and liners
A pond net keeps leaves, birds and herons off the water, while a liner is what actually holds a pond's shape and water in the first place. We stock a small, practical range for pond care rather than the excavation-scale liners a full pond build needs.
You might also want to browse slow feeder dog bowls, enrichment lick mats and drinking fountains for cats.
Choosing a net
A simple mesh net stretched over the surface stops falling leaves rotting in the water over autumn and deters herons and cats from helping themselves to the fish. The finer the mesh, the more debris it catches, but a very fine net also needs clearing more often once leaves start to fall.
Pegging or weighting the edges matters more than the net itself — a loose net that sags into the water does less good than a tight one, and a heron will still find a way in through any gap left at the edge.
Liners and pond care
A liner is the physical barrier that holds the pond's water, and most garden ponds use a flexible butyl or PVC sheet rather than a rigid pre-formed shell. Getting the size right — enough liner to cover the full depth and shape with overlap to spare — matters more than the brand of liner you choose.
Alongside nets and liners, general pond care overlaps with looking after the fish themselves: keeping the water balanced, feeding appropriately for the season, and treating for algae or parasites when needed, which is where the rest of our pond and fish range comes in.

Common questions
- Do I need a pond net all year round?
- Not necessarily — it matters most in autumn when leaves are falling and in winter against herons and cats, when fish are less able to dart for cover. Some owners remove the net over summer once the leaf-fall risk has passed.
- How do I stop herons taking fish from my pond?
- A well-secured net across the whole surface is the most reliable barrier, since herons will walk into shallow water to reach fish. Decoys and sonic deterrents exist but tend to be less consistent than a properly pegged net.
- What size pond liner do I need?
- Measure the length, width and maximum depth of the pond, then add roughly twice the depth to both the length and width figures to allow the liner to fold up the sides with overlap to spare for anchoring at the edge.
- Can I repair a small tear in a pond liner instead of replacing it?
- Small tears in flexible pond liners can often be patched with a repair kit suited to the liner material, which is far cheaper than relining the whole pond. A larger split or a liner that's degraded with age is usually better replaced.
