Plastic dog beds
A plastic dog bed is a moulded base rather than a padded one, sometimes lined with a removable cushion. It suits dogs who chew or scratch at a fabric bed, dogs kept partly outdoors, and any household that wants a bed it can hose down rather than wash.
Why choose plastic over a fabric bed
The main advantage is durability against chewing and scratching — a dog who shreds a fabric bed within weeks will generally struggle to do the same damage to a moulded plastic shell. It also wipes or hoses clean far more easily than fabric, which matters for a muddy dog, an incontinent older dog, or a bed kept in a porch or outbuilding.
The trade-off is comfort and warmth. Plastic on its own is harder and colder than a padded bed, so most owners line it with a removable cushion or blanket for everyday use and rely on the bare shell mainly for easy cleaning or outdoor use in warmer weather.
Choosing a size and shape
Size it so your dog can lie fully stretched out and turn around comfortably, the same rule as any dog bed — too small is uncomfortable, and too large defeats the sense of a cosy, contained space some dogs prefer. Raised, elevated designs let air circulate underneath, which is worth considering for a dog who overheats easily or a bed used outdoors in summer.
Check the edges and corners for smooth finishing, particularly for a puppy or a dog that chews, since a rough or cracked edge on a moulded bed can be sharp in a way padded fabric never is.
Cleaning and upkeep
A plastic bed's main practical benefit is how quickly it cleans — most just need a wipe-down or a hose-off and a dry before the dog is back on it. Any liner or cushion inside should still be washed on its own schedule, since the plastic shell itself does not need the same laundering a fabric bed does.
Check occasionally for cracks, especially in a bed that lives outside through changing weather, since UV exposure and cold can make some plastics brittle over time. A cracked bed with sharp edges should be replaced rather than patched.
