What clay litter actually offers
Clay-based litters, Fuller's earth among them, tend to clump firmly and quickly on contact with moisture, which makes daily scooping straightforward and keeps the rest of the tray drier and cleaner between full changes. They are generally heavier than plant-based alternatives like wood or pea husk litter, which some owners see as a downside for carrying and disposal.
Odour control on a good clay litter is usually strong, particularly on the scented and 'ultra' formulas in ranges like Catsan, though a strongly scented litter is not always welcomed by every cat, so watch how your cat responds if you switch to one.
Choosing between clay and the alternatives
If firm clumping and reliable odour control matter most to you, a clay litter is a solid, well-established choice, and it is what most cats are already used to if they have had access to a tray before. Plant-based litters such as pea husk or wood are lighter to carry and, for some owners, are preferred on environmental grounds, but they can clump differently and some cats take a little longer to accept the change in texture.
Whichever you choose, introduce a new litter gradually by mixing it with what your cat already uses rather than switching the tray over completely overnight — cats can be particular about a change in texture underfoot and may avoid the tray altogether if the switch is too abrupt.

Common questions
- Is clay cat litter safe?
- Yes, for normal use it is a widely used and well-established option. As with any litter, keep it away from where food is prepared, wash your hands after cleaning the tray, and if you are pregnant follow standard guidance on litter tray hygiene from your vet or GP.
- Why is my cat avoiding the litter tray after I changed the litter?
- Cats can be sensitive to a sudden change in texture or scent underfoot, and switching litter type abruptly is a common cause of tray avoidance. Introduce any new litter gradually, mixed with the old, and if the problem continues speak to your vet in case something else is going on.
- How often should clay litter be fully changed?
- Scoop solid waste and clumps daily, and do a full change and tray clean roughly every one to two weeks depending on how many cats use it and how quickly it fills. A strong ongoing smell even after scooping is usually the sign it needs a full change sooner.
- Is clay litter heavier to carry home than other types?
- Generally yes, clay and mineral litters are denser than plant-based alternatives like wood or pea husk, so a bag of the same size will weigh more. That extra weight is part of what gives clay litter its firm clumping, so it is a trade-off rather than a fault.
