Paper cat litter

Paper cat litter is a low-dust, non-clumping alternative to clay, made from recycled paper — we stock Breeder Celect's pelleted version and Bio-Catolet, both aimed at owners wanting something gentler than traditional clumping litter. Here's how it compares and when it's worth choosing.

How paper litter differs from clay

Paper litter absorbs moisture rather than clumping around it the way clay does, so cleaning is more about scooping solids and topping up regularly than digging out clumps. It also tends to produce far less dust than clay litter, which some owners and cats both notice and prefer.

It's generally lighter than clay litter too, which matters if you're carrying bags regularly or emptying and refilling a tray often, though it doesn't control odour in quite the same way clumping litter does without more frequent full changes.

When paper litter makes sense

Vets commonly suggest a paper-based litter after a cat has had surgery, since it's soft, dust-free and won't stick to a healing wound or stitches the way clumping litter can. It's a sensible option any time gentleness underfoot and low dust matter more than long odour control.

It also suits a household with a cat sensitive to scented or heavily processed litters, or anyone simply trying to reduce the amount of clay-based product going into general waste each week.

Common questions

Is paper litter as good at controlling odour as clumping litter?
Not quite in the same way — it absorbs moisture rather than clumping around it, so it needs more frequent topping up or full changes to manage odour as well as a clumping litter would with daily scooping.
Why do vets recommend paper litter after surgery?
It's soft, low-dust and won't stick to a healing wound or stitches the way clumping clay litter can, which is why it's commonly suggested as a temporary switch for a cat recovering from a procedure. Ask your vet if you're unsure what's right for your cat's recovery.
Is paper cat litter flushable?
Check the specific product, as not all paper litters are labelled safe to flush, and local plumbing and sewage guidance varies. When in doubt, bin it rather than risk a blockage.
How often does paper litter need changing?
Scoop solids daily and expect to do a fuller change more often than with clumping litter, since it doesn't isolate wet areas the same way — a build-up of moisture is the main sign it needs refreshing.
Will my cat accept a switch to paper litter?
Some cats take to it immediately and others are fussier about texture, so it's worth mixing a little into their existing litter at first rather than switching the whole tray over in one go, especially if the change is being made for a medical reason and needs to succeed.
