Vitamin, mineral and tonic supplements
Products like Johnson's Cage Bird Vitamin Tonic and the Little Friends Bird Mineral Blocks or Bird Calcium Blocks are designed to fill gaps a seed-only diet can leave, since a mix of seeds alone doesn't provide everything a cage bird needs. A mineral block also gives a bird something to peck at, which matters for beak condition as well as diet.
These are a supplement to a varied diet, not a substitute for one — a bird eating nothing but a single seed mix will still be missing things a tonic alone can't fully cover. If a bird seems consistently unwell, off its food, or its droppings change noticeably, that's a reason to speak to a vet rather than reach for a tonic and wait to see if it helps.
Keeping the cage genuinely clean
A cage that looks clean can still carry bacteria in the corners of perches, feeders and the tray underneath, which is why a proper bird-safe disinfectant like Johnson's Clean 'N' Safe Birds Disinfectant matters alongside a regular wipe-down. Ordinary household cleaners aren't formulated for use around birds and can leave residues that are fine for people but not for a small, sensitive respiratory system.

- Do I need to give my cage bird vitamin supplements?
- If your bird eats a varied diet including fresh food alongside seed, supplements are more of a top-up than a necessity, but a seed-only diet often falls short and benefits from one. A mineral block also gives a bird something useful to peck at for beak wear, separate from any nutritional benefit.
