The Whimzees Toothbrush is the brand's best-known shape: a handle to grip and a knobbly head with grooves and ridges that the maker says help work at plaque and tartar as a dog chews. It is vegetarian and grain-free, with potato starch as the base rather than meat or wheat.

This is the smaller pouch rather than the big multipack: 5 medium chews, which is a sensible way to find out whether your dog actually takes to them before committing to a box. Whimzees size by dog weight, and this size is the one they give for dogs of 12-18kg.

• 5 chews, net weight 150g (as printed on the pouch)
• Size M: for dogs of 12-18kg, aged 9 months and over
• About 87 kcal per chew, according to Whimzees
• Protein 1.1%, fat 2.0%, fibre 7.2%, ash 2.4%, moisture 12.0%
• No added meat, grains, wheat, corn, dairy, sugar, eggs, or artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, the maker says
• Made in Holland

Two things worth knowing. Whimzees recommend one chew a day and say the treat is not suitable for dogs under 9 months or under 5lb; pick by your dog's weight, not by how big the chew looks, and keep water nearby. The plaque and breath claims are the maker's; it doesn't publish the study behind them on its UK page, and it doesn't print a complete or complementary statement there either, so treat it as a daily chew alongside a full diet.

Who it's for: owners of a medium dog in the 12-18kg range, over 9 months, who want to try a meat-free dental chew before buying a larger box.
