One layer instead of two is the whole appeal here. A padded coat with a lead ring stitched into the back means no harness underneath, no straps compressing the padding, and no ten-minute negotiation at the front door with a cold dog and a tangle of nylon. The zip closes over the back, the ring sits on top, and you clip on and go.

The outer is windproof, which does more on a British winter walk than thickness alone. Still air trapped in the quilting is what keeps a dog warm, and wind stripping that air away is what makes a cold day feel far worse than the thermometer says. The quilted body carries the insulation, the zip makes it quick on and off, and the size run is unusually wide, from S right through to 5XL, in red or brown.

• Built-in D-ring, so no separate harness underneath
• Windproof outer over a quilted, padded body
• Zip fastening for quick on and off
• Sizes S to 5XL
• Two colours: red and brown
• 75 g to 195 g depending on size

The ring is not a harness. A D-ring stitched to a coat is anchored in fabric rather than in a load-bearing chest strap, and it is fine for a dog who walks on a loose lead. If yours pulls hard or lunges at squirrels, put a proper harness on underneath and clip to that instead, because stitching that gives way does so at the worst possible moment.

What the options mean. Sizes run from S to 2XL — £8.99 for the smallest, £10.99 for the largest.

Who it's for: Dogs who feel the cold and walk politely, and owners tired of layering a harness over or under a coat every morning.
