Fourteen grams. That is what this hat weighs, and it is the number that decides whether a pet tolerates being dressed up or spends the morning shaking their head at you. Felt is light, holds a shape without needing a wire frame inside it, and has no hard rim to press against the base of an ear, which is what usually makes a cat object within about four seconds.

The way to use one is the same for every pet who has never worn a hat. Let them sniff it, put it on, reward immediately, take it off before they ask you to, and repeat a few times over a couple of days rather than trying to get the whole family photograph in one attempt on Christmas morning. Get the picture in the first minute, then take it off and let them have their head back.

• Soft felt cloth, no wire frame
• 14g net weight, 16g packed
• Ships in a 12 x 12 x 5cm box
• Suits both dogs and cats
• One hat per pack
• No head measurements published by the manufacturer

We cannot give you a head measurement. The manufacturer publishes the weight and the box size and nothing else, so no strap length and no head circumference. A 12 x 12 x 5cm box clearly does not hold a big hat, but that is an inference rather than a specification, and if you need the real figure we will measure one and tell you. Costumes are also for minutes rather than hours, and never for an animal left unattended.

Who it's for: anyone who wants one good Christmas photograph without buying a whole outfit, and cats and small dogs who will not put up with anything heavier than this.
