Throwing a ball for a dog and playing tug with a dog are usually two separate toys at two separate ends of the garden. Putting the ball on a braided rope collapses that into one. The rope gives you something to grip for tug and something to swing for distance, and the textured ball gives the dog something worth chasing and then chewing on once the running stops for the afternoon.

A rope handle also solves the slobber problem, since you are picking up the rope rather than a wet ball, and it lets you launch the toy further than an arm manages on its own without needing a separate thrower. The ball surface is textured rather than smooth, which gives teeth and gums something to work against and stops it skating away across a hard floor. Six designs are listed, in paw print and cookie patterns.

• Textured chew ball on a braided rope
• Works for fetch, tug and chewing
• Rope gives a dry grip for throwing
• Six designs across paw print and cookie patterns
• Colours include blue, red and orange
• Suits active dogs who chase and carry

On rope toys generally. Fibres come loose with heavy chewing, and swallowed rope strands are the one genuine risk with this style of toy, so treat it as a supervised game rather than something to leave in the crate, and replace it once the braid starts to fray.

Who it's for: High-energy dogs who want fetch and tug in the same session, and owners who would rather buy one toy than two.
