Short-coated small dogs lose heat quickly, because there is a great deal of surface area wrapped around very little body. Chihuahuas, dachshunds and terriers start shivering on a frosty morning long before a spaniel notices anything at all, and a fleece layer genuinely helps them. This is one of the few pieces of pet clothing that is doing a real job rather than a purely decorative one.

The jumper is a soft plush fleece with a hood, cut close enough to hold warmth but with enough give through the body for a dog to trot, sniff and sit down without it riding up around the shoulders. It pulls on over the head with the front legs going through at the chest. Weights run from 60 to 85 grams across the sizes, and there are several colourways with embroidered geometric dots as well as a puppy print.

Two things about hoods and fleece. Most dogs will not keep a hood up for long, and that is fine, so treat it as a design feature rather than a function. Fleece is warm but it is not waterproof: in steady rain it soaks through and then holds cold water against the skin, which is worse than wearing nothing. Keep it for dry cold, and put a waterproof layer over the top when it is wet.
