Some dogs will happily hoover up whatever lands in the bowl, and others will work through it piece by piece, leaving behind whatever texture they like least — worth knowing before buying a muesli-style food rather than a uniform kibble, because the two behave very differently in a fussy dog's bowl.

Skinner's Ruff & Ready is built as a mix rather than a single kibble shape: protein pellets containing meat and bone meal, minerals and bran; extruded wholewheat biscuits with added vitamins; a terrier meal; cooked flaked corn with a cereal coating; dried meat greaves; extruded meat pellets; cooked flaked peas; cooked wheatflakes; and soya bean oil. It's coated with wheat glucose syrup, which Skinner's say adds natural flavour and a distinctive texture across the mix.

• Protein 21%, oil 7.5%, fibre 3.5%, ash 8.5%
• Muesli-style mix of pellets, biscuits and flakes, not a single kibble
• Coated with wheat glucose syrup
• We class it as a complete food based on the recipe
• Suitable for all adult dogs
• 15KG sack

On the mixed texture. A muesli-style food like this one can be picked through by a dog that prefers one texture over another, in the same way a rabbit or hamster mix can be — some dogs will eat the biscuits first and leave the meat pellets, or the other way round. If your dog is a known picker, a single-texture kibble may suit it better.

Who it's for: owners of an adult dog that enjoys variety in its food, rather than one that needs a uniform kibble to avoid picking around the bowl.
