A dog with a sensitive stomach or itchy skin is often being fed a diagnosis nobody has actually made, which is why a recipe built around a short, simple protein list is worth trying before anything more complicated — fewer ingredients means fewer things to rule in or out.

Simpsons' Sensitive Salmon & Potato uses a minimum of 45% salmon (a mix of deboned and dried salmon) with a minimum of 32% potato, sunflower oil, beet pulp, dried egg, brewer's yeast, salmon stock and salmon oil. It's grain free, and Simpsons add yucca extract, cranberries, nucleotides, mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) alongside glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin for joints.

• Minimum 45% salmon, minimum 32% potato
• Grain free
• Protein 25%, oil 14%, fibre 3%, ash 8%
• Calcium 1.12%, phosphorus 0.7%
• Omega-3 1.18%, omega-6 4.34%
• Includes glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin
• 2kg or 12kg sack

On the "sensitive" claim. Simpsons market this as suited to dogs with sensitive skin or digestion, and recommend it for dogs recovering from colitis or reaching their senior years — that's the manufacturer's positioning based on a short, single-protein ingredient list, not a veterinary diagnosis, and a genuinely sensitive dog is worth discussing with a vet before switching food.

Who it's for: owners of a dog with a delicate digestion or skin that reacts to richer foods, wanting a single named protein (salmon) and a simple, grain-free ingredient list to start from.
