A food that names its own ratio on the bag — 80% fish, 20% everything else — is inviting you to check the label against the claim rather than take it on trust, which is a more useful starting point than a bag that just says "with real fish".

Simpsons' 80/20 Fish is built from deboned salmon (21%), dried herring (21%) and deboned white fish (17%) as its named fish content, with salmon oil (7.5%), dried salmon (6%) and dried white fish (6%) adding further fish further down the list — potato and sweet potato carry the carbohydrate side. It's grain free, and the "20%" side includes lucerne, pea fibre, dried apple, dried carrot, spinach, dried seaweed, dried cranberry, plus glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin for joints.

• 80% fish, 20% fruit, vegetables and botanicals, 0% grain
• Deboned salmon 21%, dried herring 21%, deboned white fish 17%, named separately
• Protein 38%, oil 18%, fibre 2%, ash 10.5%
• Calcium 1.90%, phosphorus 1.24%
• Omega-3 3.34%, omega-6 1.89%
• Includes glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin
• 12KG sack

On the protein level. At 38% protein this sits well above an average adult maintenance recipe, which suits an active or working dog better than one that mostly rests — if your dog is neither, that's worth weighing against the price before buying the largest sack.

Who it's for: owners of adult or senior dogs, particularly active ones, who want a grain-free, fish-based recipe with the fish content clearly broken down rather than lumped together as one figure.
