Dog bakery is bought for the photograph, and there is nothing wrong with that as long as the buying decision is made with clear eyes. The dog would be equally delighted with a bit of chicken; the doughnut is for the candle, the caption and the fact that somebody in the house wanted to mark the day.

There are four in a box across two recipes. The Carrot Sprinkled Coated Doughnut is cereals, oils and fats, various sugars, milk and milk derivatives, vegetables and derivatives of vegetable origin, at 7% protein, 11% fat, 2% ash and 4% fibre, with 357 kcal per 100g. The Yoghurt Coated Chia Seed Sprinkles Doughnut swaps in seeds and drops the vegetables, at 8% protein, 12% fat, 1% ash and 5% fibre, with 356 kcal per 100g.

• Four doughnuts per box, two recipes
• Carrot Sprinkled: protein 7%, fat 11%, 357 kcal/100g
• Yoghurt Coated Chia Seed: protein 8%, fat 12%, 356 kcal/100g
• Both recipes contain milk and milk derivatives
• Both list various sugars in the composition
• Complementary treats

There is no meat in these, and sugar is high up both ingredient lists. Each recipe opens cereals, oils and fats, various sugars — so a dog that does badly on wheat or dairy is out on both counts, and this is a confectionery product for dogs rather than a treat that happens to look like one. At 357 and 356 kcal per 100g they are a celebration rather than a training reward. Ruffingtons publish no weight per doughnut, which is the one figure that would let you work out what a single one actually costs a dog in calories, and it has not been supplied.

Who it's for: someone marking a birthday, a gotcha day or a homecoming, with a dog that has no wheat or dairy problem and calories to spare that week.
