Details
Sniffing is how a dog reads a walk, and a fixed lead of a metre and a half stops most of that before it starts. Extra line lets them cast about on a wide verge or an empty field and still be attached to you, which is the honest appeal of a retractable: not that it gives more control, but that it buys back some freedom on ground where a long line would otherwise be the only option.
The reel takes up slack automatically as your dog moves back towards you, so the line does not end up looped around your legs the way a long lead does. A single thumb button is the whole control system: press to brake, hold to keep the line short, and lock it there while you pass another dog or step onto a pavement. The handle is shaped to be held for the length of a walk rather than gripped, which matters because a retractable is only safe while it is in your hand.
