Pets in a hot house go looking for the tiled patch of kitchen floor, because bare tile draws heat out of them faster than carpet ever will. A cooling mat is the portable version of that tile. This one is quilted rather than gel-filled, so it feels like something worth lying on instead of a slab, and it can go in the rooms where there are no tiles at all.

The quilting keeps the filling evenly spread so it does not bunch into a lump at one end after a fortnight of being trodden on, and the surface is breathable, letting body heat move away rather than building up underneath. It lies flat on a floor, inside a crate or on top of an existing bed, and it is light enough to pick up and move as the sun tracks round the house. Sizes run S to XXL, with vacuum-packed options.

• Quilted, breathable top surface
• Works on floors, in crates or over a bed
• Sizes S, M, L, XL and XXL
• Light blue, light grey and white grey
• Vacuum-packed versions available
• Suits both dogs and cats

On what it does and does not do. A mat like this makes a resting surface cooler than carpet. It is not air conditioning and it will not rescue an overheating animal. Shade, water and staying indoors through the hottest hours do the real work. If your pet is panting hard and struggling, cool them properly and ring your vet.

What the options mean. Sizes run from S to XXL — £14.99 for the smallest, £25.99 for the largest.

Who it's for: Dogs and cats who sprawl across the kitchen floor every July, and owners who would rather they sprawled somewhere comfortable.
